Overall Meaning:
The lyrics of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's song "Chhoti Si Umar Parnai O Babasa" tells the story of a young girl pleading with her father to not force her into an arranged marriage, as she is still very young. She questions him as to why he is trying to force her into marriage at such a young age, given that she still has so much to learn and experience in life. The girl reminisces on her childhood, when she would play and sing, oblivious to the trials and tribulations of adulthood.
As the girl begs her father to let her stay home, he consoles her by telling her not to cry, and assures her that she will be well-cared for in her new home. However, the girl remains steadfast in her plea, asking her father to send her to her lover instead, as she believes that it is better to be with someone she loves than someone she does not.
The song showcases the struggle that many young girls in South Asian societies still face, where marriages are arranged early and their voices are often not heard in the matter. The lyrics highlight the importance of allowing children to enjoy their childhood and grow at their own pace, rather than forcing them into adulthood prematurely.
