Overall Meaning:
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s famous qawwali “Dam Mast Qalandar” is a beautiful ode to the Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar who lived in southeastern Pakistan in the 13th century. The qawwali emphasizes the idea of surrendering oneself to the divine and experiencing spiritual ecstasy. The songs begins with the repeated phrase “Dam Mast Qalandar Must Must”, which means “the intoxicated Qalandar must stay intoxicated”. The word “Mast” is often used in Sufi poetry and literature to describe the state of spiritual intoxication or divine madness that a person experiences when they are in the presence of the divine.
The first verse of the qawwali says, “Rub Ne Kinne Shaan Banaye / Be Karma Te Karm Kamaye / Jehda Vi Tere Dar Te Aaye”. This means that God has bestowed great honor on those who are without actions and do not accumulate any deeds for themselves, but come to His door in surrender. The second verse says, “Shana Uchiyaan Terian Peera / Hovan Door Haneriyaan Peera / Aasan Reh-Ma Teriya Peera / Sun Arjaa Aj Meeriya Peera”, which means that the seeker’s reverence for the spiritual master should be like an elevated flag, away from worldly desires, while relaxing in his shelter.
The entire qawwali embodies the theme of spiritual surrender and devotion. The lyrics of the song teach us that Our Master Qalandar is the one who can free us from the grips of our ego, and lead us towards true spiritual pleasure. With the repeated “Dam Mast Qalandar” refrain, the listener can feel the joy and ecstasy that comes with being in the presence of God.
