Overall Meaning:

The opening lines of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Ni Mi Jhok Fareedan Jana refer to Fareed, to whom the singer Nak rukain is pleading to. He claims he cannot stop crying as he wanders around aimlessly because of the fear he has of Muhammad. It is his audacity to show love and respect to his beloved Fareed, which frightens him into tears. Nak rukain articulates his dilemma in doing the right thing and pleasing both Muhammad and Fareed. He then expresses his inability to keep up with the promises he made to Fareed in the past and feels guilty for it.

The next stanza starts with the singer singing the praises of Peer Fareed, asking for his blessings through a Sufi ritual. The lines are filled with metaphors of colors such as Qutabuddini rang de chola and Sabiri sohne bute paa de which are basically glorified praises of Peer Fareed. The singer then declares that he is ready to dance under Peer Fareed's name and wishes to have the vision of the almighty, Rab.

Subsequent verses describe several Sufi rituals that the singer longs to be part of, such as the shaganan waali mehndi and naal sindoor de maang saja de. The latter part of the song deals with the singer pledging his devotion to Peer Fareed and emphasizing the importance of seeking spiritual enlightenment over material desires.
